Hartley Wintney CC start girls section

Hartley Wintney Cricket Club is being helped by the Hampshire Cricket Board (HCB) to start up a girls section and recruit new U11 players.

The HCB Club Support programme offers the club 15 hours of professional guidance in various areas. This can include the likes of mentoring Coaches, tutoring volunteers and recruiting new players.

As part of this recruitment drive, HCB Development Coach Simon Hammond is going into local junior schools over the next few weeks to give cricket taster sessions to boys and girls in years 3 – 6.

The HCB Road Show school sessions are based around fun games involving fielding, batting and bowling and serve as a great introduction to cricket.

Following on from the school sessions, new players are invited to go along to try some Junior Academy indoor training sessions on Saturday mornings at the Eversley cricket centre or from May onwards outdoors at HWCC’s picturesque ground, The Cricket Green.

All these fun-based sessions are run by the club’s CRB checked and ECB qualified Coaches. The sessions for the under 11s will build on these basic skills and prepare the girls for competitive matches in the summer months against other local clubs.

Girls cricket is one of the fastest growing sports and across Hampshire there are now 16 clubs with dedicated girls sections. This has led to a huge increase in participation and the standard has risen accordingly.

The development structure is in place where gifted players will be invited to attend North Hampshire District trials in the winter and from these the County squad will be chosen.
